With generous support from Sparebankstiftelsen DNB has had UngKunst carry out the intensive program “Munch as a mentor” for three years (2021 - 2023). Here, the artistry of Edvard Munch is interpreted in the light of contemporary art. In his time, Munch was seen as an experimental artist who challenged people's perception of what art is. He was inspired by other artists and art movements, but created his own expression. We are inspired by his desire to explore, his themes in art and his ability to communicate. Throughout these three years, students from cultural schools affiliated with UngKunst have participated in workshops, had excursions to art exhibition venues, received artist visits to their cultural school and worked on practical tasks in various media - where they interpret Munch's works and methods.
As a conclusion to this initiative, we have assigned a group at each participating cultural school a contemporary artist, who works with the students towards joint exhibitions. Here, we have chosen artists who are in various ways connected to Munch's exploratory practice, with the theme "Nature" as a starting point. The project artists have related to this overarching theme, where they interpret its meaning related to their own artistic practice.
“Munch as a mentor” is inter-municipal, and several cultural schools are collaborating on these final exhibitions. Students at the cultural schools in Asker and Bærum have worked with contemporary artist Ottar Karlsen - and the result is shown in the Tower Room at Trafo kunsthall .
