SLEEPER
Ingrid Torvund & Jonas Mailand
*Gallery Dikemark
JUNE 1 - OCTOBER 13
Part of REKREASJON 2024
The artist duo Ingrid Torvund and Jonas Mailand work with a variety of techniques, including film, sculpture and drawing. Their artistic expression is characterized by a unique and personal mythology. Inspired by their own life events, they integrate nature and landscape into their works, creating a visual language that is both intimate and mysterious - almost otherworldly.
In the exhibition at Galleri Dikemark we are invited into an enigmatic forest universe where an atmosphere of the enigmatic and disturbing lingers.
Sleeper consists of a collection of individual works, including carved bedposts ornamented with small, strange creatures, large sculptural cabinets with twisted growths, and a detailed pencil drawing depicting a forest by a bloody swamp.
The exhibition also marks the first screening of the third episode in Seeper Weeper Sleeper - a film series the duo has been working on since 2020. In the series, we are introduced to strange creatures that playfully wander through the forest and perform various ritualistic maintenance ceremonies.
The carved bedposts seem to materialize as a consequence of these actions. Characters are awakened from slumber in unknown places and embark on an exploration of the strange landscape they find themselves in. Some float sleepily among the trees, while others wearily cry themselves to sleep. The bed is transformed into an altar of sleep, where individuals are sacrificed and resurrected on the other side.
The exhibition also consists of two aluminum panels showing horses and people falling, a ritual costume with embroidery, and a small headboard with carved worms. A stone creature with a hat has found its place in the closet, while a head slowly opens along the wall. Sleeper is an exhibition where sleep appears as a symbol of both security and vulnerability.
